With Dr Paul Clayton

Clinical pharmacologist and pharmaco-nutritionist

His pharmacological background brings questions of mechanism, dose, interaction, timing, evidence and measurable response into nutrition.

  • Understand how inflammation, gut biology and nutrition connect across the body.
  • Put test results inside a wider health and professional context.
  • Ask Dr Clayton questions from your own work during the live Q&A.

I’m organising this free conversation for my professional community. You are welcome to share it with colleagues who would value it.

THE QUESTION BEHIND THE SESSION

We have more medicine, more testing and more health information than ever. Why are chronic conditions still increasing, and appearing earlier?

Dr Clayton’s work directs attention to the years before a diagnosis, when low-grade inflammation, altered immune regulation, microbial changes, nutritional insufficiencies and metabolic dysfunction may already be changing the body.

01

WHY DR PAUL CLAYTON

Nutrition examined through the discipline of pharmacology.

Dr Paul Clayton

Dr Paul Clayton is a clinical pharmacologist and pharmaco-nutritionist. He graduated summa cum laude in Medical Pharmacology from the University of Edinburgh before completing his PhD.

He is a former Chair of the Forum on Food & Health and a former Senior Scientific Advisor to the UK government’s Committee on the Safety of Medicines. He has worked internationally with doctors and clinical scientists, helping to design and supervise pre-clinical and clinical studies of pharmaco-nutritional interventions.

In 2022, he was recognised in the Doctor-to-Doctor World’s Top 100, a peer-nominated international recognition for contribution to healthcare, science, innovation and professional leadership.

His value is not simply that he speaks about nutrition. His pharmacological background brings questions of mechanism, dose, interaction, timing, evidence and measurable response into a field too often reduced to generic advice.

A DIFFERENT STARTING POINT

The stronger question is not simply “What should I eat?” It is: what is already changing in the body, how can we recognise it earlier, and what can still be influenced?

02

THE SCIENCE WE PLAN TO EXPLORE

Not isolated symptoms. Connected biological processes.

The final programme will be agreed with Dr Clayton. These questions reflect the central areas of his research, writing and teaching.

01

What happens before disease becomes visible?

Chronic conditions rarely begin when symptoms first appear. We will examine the silent biological changes that may develop for years before a diagnosis, and why prevention must begin earlier than most people realise.

02

When does protective inflammation become damaging?

Acute inflammation is essential. Persistent low-grade inflammation is different. The session will examine what may prevent inflammatory processes from resolving and why their effects can appear across seemingly unrelated body systems.

03

Why is the microbiome relevant far beyond digestion?

The gut microbiome interacts with the intestinal barrier, immune system, metabolism, inflammatory signalling and compounds involved in communication with the brain. Gut health therefore cannot be understood as an isolated digestive issue.

04

Why can the same advice produce different results?

Food intake is only one part of nutrition. Digestion, absorption, age, medication, stress, microbial activity, nutrient reserves and existing health conditions all influence the result. Personalisation begins by recognising those differences.

05

What can testing add, and what can it not tell us?

Testing does not explain every symptom and does not replace medical care. Used responsibly, it can reduce guesswork, identify measurable patterns, guide more precise decisions and show whether an intervention is creating the intended change.

06

Can we protect healthspan, not simply extend lifespan?

The deeper goal of prevention is to preserve function, resilience, cognition, mobility and independence. That requires attention to the biological foundations of later health long before decline is considered inevitable.

03

PHARMACO-NUTRITION

More precise than calling a nutrient “healthy”.

Pharmaco-nutrition considers how nutrients and bioactive compounds may influence biological pathways in specific and clinically meaningful ways.

It asks more demanding questions: Which mechanism is being targeted? Is the amount biologically relevant? How do nutrients interact? How can the response be assessed? When is nutritional support appropriate, and when is medical evaluation needed?

This is what makes Dr Clayton’s work valuable to professionals and health-conscious individuals alike. It replaces simplistic promises with a stronger framework for thinking, measuring and deciding.

FOR PROFESSIONALS

A framework for complex cases.

For health and wellness professionals, the session will examine how apparently separate concerns may share biological mechanisms, where testing may add meaningful information, and how to distinguish responsible personalisation from unsupported assumptions.

  • Connect symptoms without reducing everything to one cause.
  • Think more precisely about inflammation, microbial activity and nutrient status.
  • Place measurements inside a wider clinical and human context.
  • Communicate complex science without overpromising.

FOR HEALTH ENTHUSIASTS

A clearer map of your own health.

For people interested in their own health, this is an opportunity to understand why persistent concerns are not always solved by another generic diet, supplement list or wellness trend.

  • Understand why one symptom may have several contributing factors.
  • See how the gut, immunity, metabolism and brain communicate.
  • Learn where personal data may be more useful than assumptions.
  • Ask better questions without fear or unrealistic promises.

04

LIVE Q&A

Ask Dr Clayton your questions live.

The session will include a live Q&A, giving you the opportunity to ask about the issues most relevant to your own health or professional work.

You may want to ask how test results should be interpreted in context, which microbiome changes are meaningful, how chronic inflammation can be discussed without attributing every symptom to it, or where nutrition can support medical care and where its limits lie.

You can also submit a question when registering. This will help shape the session around what participants most want to understand.
